Full of life and laughs,” one year old Jia is a Tetralogy of Fallot survivor. She endured her first open heart surgery when she was five months old. She enjoys Sesame Street and Ring around the Roses in her free time. Jia is expected to have another open heart surgery by the time she is ten years old. The advancement of treatment may help to avoid invasive surgical repair.
Shortly after Jordyn’s birth December 12, 2004, she was diagnosed with Truncus Arteriosus. She had open heart surgery when she was four days old and spent the next 26 days in the CICU. Sadly, Jordyn passed away on her one-month birthday. We remember Jordyn everyday and nicknamed her Jordyn Ali because of the remarkable fight she endured. At the time of Jordyns repair she had a 50/50 chance of survival, today babies have an 90% chance of survival. Continued lifesaving research is critical for treatment and prevention of CHD.
Tamika was born with TAPVR. She was two months old when she passed away before doctors were able to repair her CHD.
Jackson Alexander was born in 2004 with complete congenital heart block. As I jump forward five years, Jackson did remarkably well. We endured lots of doctor’s appointments and fortunately he did not need medications or surgeries. In April 2005, Jackson had his first open heart surgery to close an ASD that was also being monitored along with his heart block. He did fantastic and with only a few minor setbacks he made a full recovery from his procedure. His determination and perseverance kept us all in check and made us push through this very difficult time with faith, hope, courage and laughter. Today, Jackson still lives with the complete heart block at 10 years of age. He is a free spirited boy who enjoys life to the fullest and without regrets.
